Your lefthand example works on "i" as a global variable - it has additional effects compared to the example on the right. Tools like this are common within Java as Java and similar are easier to this kind of analysis on. IntelliJ IDEA is long reigning champ in this area. (Which is a product I would pay for.)

it is but I'm sitting here thinking about a piece of java software I use in my daily life (on the desktop) that isn't a backend. The only one I can think of is intelliJ IDEA (still blows my mind that it is written with javax.swing). Other than that java for desktop feels dead. Qt and GTK have python bindings so why would anyone actually bother with java
