Thanks onion2k, great point it's importance to not go too far with the hype. There are certainly a ton of things users can do in pro softwares that Shred Video doesn't (yet!) deliver. We've found most GoPro/equivalent users don't want to go to the trouble or pay the cost (Final Cut Pro is $299 in the Mac store) of these pro softwares, Shred Video is a great solution for them.

Also Final Cut Pro is $299 for most people but for education users (as OP is going to college) there is the option to pay $199 and you get Final Cut Pro, Compressor, Logic Pro, Motion and Main Stage which is a pretty great deal IMO.

Premiere is perfectly fine, but the Adobe subscription is a trap you should avoid at any cost. There are lots of horror stories about the subscription being impossible to cancel, people unable to work because their servers took a nap, the Adobe installer messing with your computer and installing a lot of stuff behind your back... Absolute horror. If you're on Mac and you don't like DaVinci, Final Cut Pro is worth a look.
