  FWIW the past 6 years at CircleCI it's worked out really well; we've taken the approach of adding specs relentlessly at the system boundaries rather than having types everywhere, and keeping each individual codebase relatively small; most codebases remain under 10kloc and nothing over 25k. The experience pbiggar is talking about is from before I joined when there was a single 120kloc+ monolith codebase which was nightmarish, but like ... you don't have to do it that way.
